In the early morning of 18 November, 40 gunmen brutally murdered chief NÍSIO, Guarani Kaiowá of Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil). This conflict is a fight for land and it has already accumulated other crimes and violence.

Encouraged and supported by a social science professor, Kaiowá students wrote a letter in opposition to the murder of Chief Nísio.

The Human Right and Earth Forum of Mato Grosso collected 79 signatures from many Brazilian organisations, movement and forum, besides 149 personal signatures from Brazil and international aid. The Manifesto was given to the Department of Human and Earth Right on 2nd december, 2011.

Letter from Guarani and Kaiowá students:

Around six A.M. came the gunmen. They entered in line already calling for Nísio. They said: “get Nísio, get Nísio”. When Nísio was seen, he got the first shot in the throat and his body began to tremble. Then he took another shot in the chest and leg. His little grandson saw his grandpa on the ground and ran to grab him. Then another gunman came and started beating on Nísio’s face with the gun. Two more people were killed.

Some others were shot but survived. They also shot with rubber bullets. People screamed and ran from one side to the other trying to escape and hide in the bush. People jumped from a small cliff in the area. A boy who was hit by a rubber shot jumped and broke his leg.He could not escape with the others, so he had to hide under tree branches to not be killed.
Another boy who hid on a tree canopy was who called me to tell what had happened. He said soon after the fact. He called crying a lot. He said they kicked Nísio’s body to see if he was dead and shot him once more to ensure leadership was dead. They threw his body in the back of a truck carrying his body away.

We are gathered here to claim for unity and justice in this time.

After all, what are Indians to Brazilian society?Today we see human rights, protection to the environment, to animals, but what about theindigenous populations? How they have been treated?
The people who did this know the laws, they know rights, they know that the indigenous land must be mapped; they know that this is what was decided by the justice department. So why did they do that? Are they above the law?

The state of Mato Grosso do Sul is one of the last states in Brazil but it is the first in violenceagainst indigenous people. It is the state that kills more indigenous people. It seems that Nazism is present here. It seems that Mato Grosso do Sul became a field for firing atindigenous people. Nísio’s execution is proof of that. When they don´t kill by gunshot, they kill by hit and run. We can say the state, politicians, and society are all complicit in this violence as they don´t say anything, they do nothing to change it. The Indians have becomethe new Jews.

And where are our rights, human rights, the constitution? And we are there subjected tosuch violence. The Indians live in fear, fear of dying. But that will not silence the fight for demarcation of indigenous lands. Because Ñandejara is in the good side and who makes thefinal justice is him. If the justice of the land does not work, God’s justice will.

Guarani and Kaiowá students of science courses and social history, residents at Amambaívillage.

Hector Kaiowá left a new comment on your post "Letter from Guarani Kaiowá Students”

It is not true that Brazilian people hate Indians. I am the grandson of Guarani Kaiowá and I live in Sao Paulo and I will speak the whole truth.
The biggest problem is that the Governor André Puccinelli is the head of a mob offarmers who are used to steal Indian land. There are several corrupt agencies in Mato Grosso do Sul who falsify ownership documents. My people Guarani Kaiowá alwaysgoes in search of the land of their grandparents and their ancestors and often theselands are already taken. Bogus documents. And they complain at FUNAI, but thisfederal agency that is supposed to work in defense of the Indians is also sold out. TheGovernor has been buying the prosecutor of his state, has been buying judges to decide in favor of farmers and has been buying Military Police who participated in thislatest murder. We have no one to turn to. All doors are closed. Greed is so great thatcows cost more than children. This genocide took more than 20 people betweenChiefs, Leaders, Tchamoy and a Kunhã Karai.
